Over US$6 billion has been committed to building Olympic venues and related infrastructure to transform the Black Sea town of Sochi into a first-class host site with modern transport links. The level of construction of infrastructure and leisure activities throughout the Krasnodar region will be formidable and a principal goal of the Russian Government. The impact of such growth has placed the Sochi and the Krasnodar region in the international spotlight. The City of Nottingham has developed close links with Krasnodar City to establish and build business between both areas. UK Trade & Investment's visit to the region will look to build business relationships further. Krasnodar Krai (krai meaning ‘Territory’) is the Southern-most border region of Russia and covers an area of 76,000 km sq with a population of just 5.3 million. The Gross Regional Product (GRP) has grown faster than Russian average, through an economy based on rural/agriculture, the industries of mining and manufacturing and the production and distribution of power, gas and water. Sochi is located in Krasnodar Krai just north of the southern Russian border and has a population of around 395,000. Sochi has a humid sub-tropical climate and is situated between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains. The town and sea port is popular with Russian and eastern European tourists. Hospitality standards are poor and Sochi lacks international know how due to the town being largely dominated by small local businesses. "London 2012 bid had 75% of facilities in place – we have nothing" By 2014 Sochi is looking to to raise the hospitality and quality of facilities including hotels, restaurants, roads, offices, retail outlets, power generation and stadia to the international standards expected by visitors to the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Around 5,700 front office/line management and 33,500 service staff will need training in all areas. The wider development of Krasnodar ahead of the Games is a huge task, and will create one of the most dynamic elements within the Russian economy. "The proven expertise, innovation and professionalism of British companies make them world leaders in this field. It has never been more important for UKTI to make these businesses aware of the support that we can give them to capitalise on this." UKTI Chief Executive Sir Andrew Cahn A number of British companies have already won contracts to work on the Sochi Games, and MOCT - one of the largest civil engineering contractors in Russia - has signed a multi-million pound contract with JCB to buy plant for use on the Winter Olympic transport infrastructure. But the majority of opportunities for UK firms have not yet been tapped. Our visit to Sochi and Krasnodar between 21-27th March, will allow you and your business to explore the vast potential in the region for UK businesses. The closing date for applications is the 26th February 2010. "THE SOCHI OLYMPIAD IN 2014 WILL BE THE MOST DYNAMIC COMPONENT OF THE RUSSIAN ECONOMY FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS..."
